Chess for ChildrenLevel: Beginners (ages 6-9)

Your children will learn the rules, tactics and strategies required to play Chess, and come to know an entertaining game that combines thinking, creativity, and fun.

Why learn Chess?

Chess is considered a combination of science, sports and art. The game, which at a glance seems simple and fun, contains countless moves and is known for its ability to develop many skills in children such as decision-making, problem-solving and creative thinking. Many studies show that Chess raises children’s IQ levels, improves memory and concentration, language acquisition, and even mathematical ability.

At the beginner’s level, we teach children with no experience how to play, win and enjoy Chess. The program combines theory and play, allowing children to practice and use the information they learned immediately. Our experienced instructors will accompany your children throughout lessons and games, encouraging them to be patient, think creatively, and win and lose with dignity.

Course Curriculum

The children will become familiar with the game of Chess, with the various rules, tools and moves, and play Chess online with the help of lichess.org software. Once they've acquired the basics and practiced playing the game with their teammates, the kids will start learning different tactics and strategies that will allow them to solve problems and plan victory in more than one move.

Learning Environment

Lichess

Lichess

The children will play Chess online with lichess.org software, which allows the instructor to create a unique tournament for the group, to pair up the children according to their level and guide them during the game. The children can continue playing using the software even after class, to practice and enjoy the Chess game.

Learning Stages

Familiarity with the chess pieces

Familiarity with the chess pieces In the first 8 sessions, the children will get to know the chessboard, the names of the pieces, and how to arrange them on the board. In addition, they will learn what moves each piece can make and understand the difference between check and checkmate. The sessions are accompanied by exercises and Chess-language games to encourage children to participate in the early stages of learning.

Start playing!

Start playing! In the next 9 sessions, the children will become familiar with the lichess.org software in which they will start playing Chess with their classmates in fun, competitive tournaments. Each lesson is divided into two parts; in the first section, the teacher explains the rules, and in the second section the children play a full game with all the pieces, and learn that in order to win in Chess, you have to try to figure out what the opponent is planning.

Practice makes perfect

Practice makes perfect From lessons 18 to 25, the children continue to play and improve their technique, while learning additional rules and moves. For example, "stalemate"- a state of a draw, or for example how to perform a "checkmate" when there are only a queen and a king on the board against an opposing king, or two rooks and a king against an opposing king.

First steps in tactics and strategy

First steps in tactics and strategy From lesson 26 to the end of the program (lesson 32) the children learn special moves such as "En Passant" in which the pawn captures another pawn in the game as part of its progress on the board. In addition, the children begin to learn various tactics and strategies for the game, such as "forks" or "skewers" and realize that there is no end to the enjoyment and depth of study in the game of Chess.

How we make it work

Tekkie Uni specializes in operating live-online sessions with full real-time interaction guided by an experienced and attentive teacher, because we believe that with a little help every child who wants to learn – can!

  • Learning together

The question is not what we are learning, but with whom. That's why we use video conference software allowing a small group of children to get to know each other and their teacher. The teacher uses a shared screen option so everyone can see what they is doing on their desktop, and kids can fully participate in the lesson by using the microphone or the chat.
  • Games & Tournaments

Learning by playing has many advantages. Playing increases the motivation and interest of the children, adds social interaction to the lesson and allows children to acquire new knowledge naturally and in a fun way. The sessions in the program combine theoretical learning and practice through games and tournaments, guided by an experienced teacher.
  • Practice and reviewing

The kids practice outside the classroom, too. They continue to play Chess online and score points using the lichess.org software. In addition, they review the new rules with interactive group trivia games using the Kahoot app.
