Chess for Children - AdvancedLevel: Advanced (ages 8-9)

Children experienced in Chess will improve their game technique and learn complex tactics and strategies to lead and win at the game.

How to lead a Chess game?

Chess is one of the most complex games in the world with countless moves, tactics and strategies. We believe that considering children’s high learning and absorbing capabilities, it is important to perfect their Chess skills at a young age and enhance their thinking, decision-making and creativity abilities.

At the advanced level, we teach children who have learned and played Chess in the past, how to use complex tactics and strategies to lead a voyage on the Chessboard. The children will learn professional concepts such as opening principles, forks, pinning, and different end-of-game positions. Through a combination of theory and play, they will continue to enjoy Chess and develop new skills and ways of thinking that will serve them in all walks of life.

Course Curriculum

Advanced-level children will develop their game techniques and learn complex tactics and strategies such as opening principles, forks, pinning, and different end-of-game positions. Each session consists of a theoretical and practical part in which the children play Chess online with the help of lichess.org software, and enjoy learning, playing and developing their abilities.

Learning Environment

Lichess

Lichess

The children will play Chess online with lichess.org software, which allows the instructor to create a unique tournament for the group, to pair up the children according to their level and guide them during the game. The children can continue playing using the software even after class, to practice and enjoy the Chess game.

Learning Stages

Opening Principles

Opening Principles Professional players learn by heart many opening moves so as not to make mistakes at the start of the game, that will give an early advantage to the opponent. The first 4 lessons emphasize learning opening principles and focus on the different variations for opening the game.

Review

Review The following 5 sessions are a review of basic material to make sure that the children remember what each piece does, how to capture, strike, what is castling, and what is check and checkmate. The review is important for implementing the basics of the game and to advance to more complex tactics and strategies.

Developing tactics

Developing tactics What is a tactic? A tactic is a sophisticated maneuver led on the Chessboard. From lessons 10 to 18, the children learn the following tactics- forks, pinning, and discovered attacks. They will do so through exercises, games and tournaments with their teammates and guided by the instructor.

End game

End game From lesson 19 to 32 the children practice different tactics, improve their game technique, and learn the principles of ending a game that is one of the most difficult topics in studying Chess. The end of a game occurs when many pieces have been captured without gaining a decisive advantage for any side. This phase includes a small number of pieces for each side where the players try to defeat each other. Because the finish requires accuracy, many players carefully learn common end game positions.

How we make it work

Tekkie Uni specializes in operating live-online sessions with full real-time interaction guided by an experienced and attentive teacher, because we believe that with a little help every child who wants to learn – can!

  • Learning together

The question is not what we are learning, but with whom. That's why we use video conference software allowing a small group of children to get to know each other and their teacher. The teacher uses a shared screen option so everyone can see what they is doing on their desktop, and kids can fully participate in the lesson by using the microphone or the chat.
  • Games & Tournaments

Learning by playing has many advantages. Playing increases the motivation and interest of the children, adds social interaction to the lesson and allows children to acquire new knowledge naturally and in a fun way. The sessions in the program combine theoretical learning and practice through games and tournaments, guided by an experienced teacher.
  • Practice and reviewing

The kids practice outside the classroom, too. They continue to play Chess online and score points using the lichess.org software. In addition, they review the new rules with interactive group trivia games using the Kahoot app.
